The 25th annual Freedom Fund scholarship banquet and awards ceremony will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at the Georgia International Horse Park’s Carriage Room.

This year’s theme, “With Education and Hard Work, Your Goals are Attainable,” highlights the Rockdale County NAACP’s quarter century of support for education in the community. Scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,000, are given at the end of the school year to one deserving senior from each Rockdale high school.

Organizer Allene Eatman said, “With cutbacks in the economy, the more we can do to help the students, the better it is. They have books to buy. They have to pay for their lodging and food... Whatever we can give to help defray the costs can help.”

This year’s guest speaker is state Sen. Ronald Ramsey, who represents the 43rd district covering parts of DeKalb, Rockdale and Newton counties.

The Jean Williams Community Service Award will also be given at the ceremony to a community member who has served above and beyond.

Tickets are $40 per adult in advance and $50 at the door. Tables of 10 are $400. Children 12 years old and under are $20. For tickets, contact organizer Allene Eatman at 770-715-4836.
