17-year-old auto theft suspect caught after chase

Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputies caught a suspected car thief after the 17-year-old led deputies on a chase into DeKalb County.

Thursday morning, around 7:46 a.m., dispatchers received a call about an auto theft in progress on Willow Court in south Rockdale County.

Approximately 10 minutes later, RCSO deputies saw the stolen vehicle on Smyrna Road driving towards Iris Drive.

Deputies began pursuing the car as it continued onto Iris Drive, heading westbound into DeKalb County.

The vehicle and driver stopped near the new Wal-Mart and Best Buy, where the suspect got out of the vehicle and ran on foot.

RCSO deputies were able to locate the suspect within two minutes, running near the Best Buy and I-20. He was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as Jonathan Preston Buckley, 17, of Conyers. Buckley is currently in the Rockdale County Jail facing charges of Theft by Taking (Motor Vehicle), Reckless Driving and Obstruction.

More charges may be pending.
