Gospel sounds support CLC

A Southern gospel music concert is coming to Newton County to help raise money for a new school program that will teach the gospel.

The Inspirations and The Johnson Brothers will perform at 7 p.m., Saturday at Eastridge Community Church, 863 Ga. Highway 142 East, Covington; tickets are $10 at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Newton County Christian Learning Center, a start-up program that will offer religious studies to public school students at outside locations.

The Inspirations first formed in the 1960s and have gone through numerous changes over the years, producing dozens of records and winning several Gospel awards.

The Christian Learning Center (CLC) is a legally protected form of "release-time education," through which public school students receive religious instruction if parents sign a permission form. CLC classes in Newton County will be available to all high school students, preferably juniors and seniors who can provide their own transportation, director Chad Caldwell said previously.

The first classes are scheduled to start in January at Journey Church, 1150 Monticello St., and will be taught by Kurt Petersheim, youth pastor at Eastridge.
