They choose to serve.
Our story on Sept. 11 focused on just three of Newton County’s servicemen and their families. These young people have embarked on military careers. They are willing to do what it takes, wherever in the world their service might take them. We know, as we write, there are many, many dedicated men and women from Newton County who are serving their country.
While the rest of us enjoy the spirited back-and-forth debate about whether our country should take action against Syria, we must remember that our freedom to have such debates isn’t free. In the history of our great country, it never has been.
Members of our armed forces stand at the ready around the world. At any time, some of them might be called upon to put themselves in harm’s way.
We salute each and every one of Newton County’s servicemen and servicewomen — and their families.
We haven’t forgotten you.
