An Irish Christmas Blessing

The light of the Christmas star to you

The warmth of home and hearth to you

The cheer and good will of friends to you

The hope of a childlike heart to you

The joy of a thousand angels to you

The love of the Son and God’s peace to you

As we celebrate the 2,010 anniversary of the birth of Christ this Saturday, we reflect on the good and positive things we have to celebrate here in Newton County.

Recently Associated Press reported that Newton County is the 19th-most economically stressed county in the nation.

That might be true on paper, but it is far from the truth when it comes to the special spirit in those of us who call this home.

This very cold season we have seen acts of kindness including the sharing of food and toys and gifts for the little ones.

We have seen neighbors go out of their way to help their neighbors through these tough economic times.

We have seen elected officials of our city say no to passing on extra costs for electricity this year.

We still see people with a smile and extra giddiup in their step.

We have seen stepped-up efforts from our law enforcement people who protect us around the clock from those who do not share the same spirit.

We have seen our firefighters go out in freezing temperatures to ensure that our homes are safe.

As we drive around our community, we see the twinkling lights and special Christmas displays that warm hearts.

We have a good and caring people who live here in Newton County, who not only show that spirit during the Christmas season but all year long.

So we don’t worry when national news groups report that we are in somebody’s top 20 and should be rolling in self pity and demanding federal money to survive.

We know and experience the true spirit of our community. We see a people who might be a little down, but are ready, willing and able to charge ahead and enjoy the prosperity that will be awaiting us some time in the future.

In order for our staff to enjoy some special time with their families, we will be putting out a special weekend edition, which will be distributed late Christmas Eve night and be at your house Christmas Day.

We will not have a Friday or a Sunday paper.

We hope you enjoy our Christmas treat for you, and that you enjoy a very special Christmas this year.
