For further review
The Social Circle City Council did the right thing by sending the proposal for a drag strip to be built off the Interstate 20 corridor back to the town’s planning commission for further study.
This project has been fraught with apparent miscommunication and lack of details. To try to rush its approval was wrong.
There is talk about bringing this project back for discussion and a vote in January. Our recommendation is that more time be taken to study the pluses and minuses of such a project not only for the taxpayers of Social Circle, but also for their neighbors in Walton and Newton counties.
We have to give the Social Circle Council credit though. After major community opposition of the project, they were smart enough to pull it back for further review. Maybe the president of the United States and his Democrat cohorts could learn a lesson from small town politics — when a majority of the populace opposes a project (like the health reform bill) elected officials should not blindly push it through the legislative process.
We are afraid President Obama has a bigger ego than Social Circle Mayor Jim Burgess and that it won’t allow him to do the right thing.
