Our Thoughts: Football and fall

Football Friday nights are special this year around Covington.

At Newton High School, the Rams are undefeated and ranked 10th in the state in Class AAAAA by the Associated Press. At Eastside High School, the Eagles are 4-1 and ranked ninth in Class AAA.
Congratulations to both.

Eastside is a regular face in the football polls, but this marks the first appearance for Newton in the football rankings since 1995. No small feat, considering that Coach Cortez Allen assumed head coaching duties just days before the first game.

Leadership changes at such a late date could have led to a mediocre season, but the team, the coaches and the school hung tough. It's a joy to watch the Rams come together and enjoy success.

Friday, the Rams face another test when they take on East Coweta High School at 7:30 p.m. at Sharp Stadium. Eastside is on the road to face regional foe Sandy Creek in Tyrone, and Alcovy High School's Tigers are traveling to Ola.

They need you there in the stands.

If your idea of football is to be glued to the couch and commune with the TV on Saturday and Sunday, you owe it to yourself to head out to a game tonight and have some fun.

It's going to be a beautiful fall night, perfect football weather.
