Our thoughts... A generation of heroes

On Veterans Day we salute all who served, but this year The Covington News focused its tribute to those who served in World War II, a generation that laid a foundation of peace and prosperity and shaped our world.

We listed veterans who served from Newton County who have been honored on the World War II Memorial site www.wwiimemorial.com. That list is a great tribute, but it is incomplete. It lists those who are buried in military cemeteries or are listed as missing, those listed on official government records as killed in action, and veterans who have been honored through enrollment in the Registry of Remembrances.

A booklet from the period, "General Marshall’s Victory Report," offers another list of those who served. You can find the names from the book on Page X.

You can honor your veteran at the Registry of Remembrances at www.wwiimemorial.com. Click on registry.

We are grateful to all veterans for the sacrifices they have made for this nation. Thanks so much for your service and for keeping us safe.
