Friday we ran a sports story that reported there will be a special ceremony at the Newton High gym later this month to honor the 1965 state runner up Wolverines from R.L. Cousins High School. If you missed it you can see it at covnews.com.
Because of the efforts of current Newton basketball coach Rick Rasmussen and Josh Briggs, the sports editor of The News, a banner featuring the colors of the '65 team will be lifted to the rafters to hang proudly next to the one that honors the Rams' 1964 state champion team.
This is the right and fitting thing to do, especially at the flagship school of our county. We are proud of a community that can finally remember and honor the achievements of members of the community that did not receive their due honors when they were earned.
Having the banners of our 1964 state champions and our 1965 state runner up champions hanging proudly side by side is a testament to our community's continued growth. While R.L. Cousins doesn't have its own active gym to display such an accomplishment, Newton, the school that absorbed those proud Wolverines once integration finally was accomplished, does.
We salute coach Rasmussen and the rest of the Newton High administration for helping to make this acknowledgement possible.
