Fireworks boomed; business didnt

We are glad that City of Covington officials made the decision to have a Fourth of July family day, capped off by a very good display of fireworks.

It’s too bad that dreary weather on the Fourth forced them to move the celebration to Saturday, July 6, instead. Not much could be done about that.

One thing that the city can control, however, and did not do a good job with, was traffic control.

Blocking off the whole downtown, shutting down for all practical purposes the biggest shopping day of the week for merchants on the square and the surrounding businesses, just doesn’t make sense.

We have heard that a few businesses closed their doors in frustration.

One of the purposes of having events on the square is to attract people downtown to shop.

We hope that next year, and on any other major holiday when activities are planned on the square, that better planning for traffic flow is used.
