A great many of us grew up hearing that the mail must always go through: "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night. ..."

We suppose that saying was true in the days of horses and carriages, but on Tuesday, the mail did not come through. The Post Office was closed due to the weather.

That "neither rain’’ vow was never the official pledge of the U.S. Post Office, but it was inscribed on a post office building in New York and became official as far as the public was concerned.

We are proud to say that the "neither snow, nor rain …" pledge can be applied to our newspaper carriers. Though a little late, our Wednesday newspapers were delivered. And members of our news staff used our website to keep our readers posted about closings and other need-to-know information. We thank them for their efforts.

Many of our roads were indeed treacherous; some were covered with solid sheets of ice from Tuesday evening into Wednesday. By about 10, however, most of the main streets were clear. That was in some part due to the hard work of our police, fire department and public works personnel.

We thank our police and fire departments and anyone else who braved the weather to be of service to our community.

To our knowledge, there were no serious incidents. We are more than grateful for that.
