"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day." - Edith Lovejoy Pier

Tomorrow is the beginning of a new year, nature doesn't recognize it, and the world still goes spinning merrily along.

In spite of this we recognize Jan. 1 as a time to begin anew, to try to forget the unpleasant happenings of a year past.

We celebrate its arrival with great joy and excitement. It truly gives us a chance to start again, to improve on our fortunes and to live a better life.

Unfortunately, many of the dreams and goals we will set for this next year will not happen for a myriad of reasons.

That really doesn't matter, because the coming of New Year's Day every year gives us the opportunity to become something better than what we have been, and that in itself is a reassuring blessing.

Our staff here at The Covington News and CovNews.com prays you and your family have a prosperous and productive New Year in 2009. Together we can continue to work on making our community the safe and productive place we wish it to be.
