Walker Combs Harris, of Covington, died November 29, 2009, at the age of 88. Son of the late James (Jim) and Nora Kitchens Harris, he was a member of Covington First Baptist Church for over 80 years. Mr. Harris served as Mayor of Covington from 1964-1968, was past member of the Covington Chamber of Commerce and Covington Kiwanis Club, charter member and past President (1959-1960) of Covington Lions Club, charter member of Covington Elks Club 1806, Exalted Ruler (1961-1963), and District Deputy of Northeast Georgia Elks Association. He was also a member of Golden Fleece Lodge No. 6 for over 25 years, past President of the Newton County High Ram Booster Club, past officer of the Georgia Automobile Dealers Association and CEO of Walker Harris Autos for over 55 years. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his first wife, Cora Settle Harris; son, Stanley Walker Harris; sister, LaTrelle Harris Edmonds; brother, Samuel Loyce Harris. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Allison Harris; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Dyer Harris; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony Drew and Donna Shadburn Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Marshall and Dawn Harris Atha; grandchildren, Trudy Harris, Matt and Ida Harris, Katie and Jake Davis, Laney and Corey Crowder, Lucy Harris, LaTrelle and Lance Cawthon, Dusty Atha, Wesley and Brittany Atha; great-grandchildren, Will and Chan Cawthon, Parks and Hudson Harris, Hallie and Payton Davis, Cora Bell Atha; niece, Joy Harris; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and John Boggs, Linda and David Ogle; step-son, Larry Nelms. Funeral services for Mr. Harris will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 3:00 PM at Covington First Baptist Church, with Rev. Len Strozier and Rev. J. J. Wilson officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, on Monday, November 30, from 5-8 PM.
