Venson “Smitty” Smith of Oxford, passed away December 5, 2010, at the age of 70. Mr. Smith started his own transportation log hauling business, Smith Hauling, in 1987. In addition, he owned his own radiator shop and built houses for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman, and loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and camping. He enjoyed watching television, especially western movies; and also enjoyed playing his guitar, harmonica, and dulcimer. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, William Arthur and Minnie Sylvester (Brown) Smith; three sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Frances (Thompson) Smith of Oxford; daughter, Frances Elaine Nolley of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Vincent Alan Smith, Rodney Arnold and Samantha Smith, Mark Aaron Smith, all of Oxford; sisters, Isabell Harden of Lyons, GA, Imogene Kersey of Jacksonville, KY, Joann Smith of Gray; brothers, Frank Smith of Statesboro, Pat Smith of Savannah; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mr. Smith will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., with Rev. Roy D. Cates, Sr., officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, December 6, from 5-8 PM.
