Captain Charlie Smith, age 76, a lifelong resident of Newton County passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017. He was born Oct. 2, 1941, in Mansfield to the late Usher T. and Vesta Nash Smith. Charlie grew up in Mansfield and went to serve his country in the United States Army before returning home and starting his career in law enforcement that spanned 30 years. Captain Smith was many things to many people; a friend, a companion, a leader and a prankster. He was known by all the deputies he worked with over the years to be the one who would have been behind any prank pulled on them. Captain Smith’s love for his fellow deputies could only be equaled by the love of his family. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Patsy Peek, and is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Becky Heisten, of Covington, and her children and grandchildren who cared for him dearly; his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas “Tom” and Betty Ann Smith, of Mansfield; his niece and nephew, Eileen and Mike Davis and Tommy and Pat Smith all of Mansfield along with a host of other family and close friends.
