Mamie Ruth Pittard Almand, age 91, of Covington, passed away on April 7, 2016, at Harbor Grace Hospice in Atlanta. The daughter of the late Warner Pittard and Mamie King Pittard, Mamie was born on December 22, 1924. She was raised and graduated from high school in Stone Mountain. She married Warren Candler Almand Jr. on July 4, 1946. Her life centered on being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She and her husband worked together in their janitorial business after his retirement. In their later years they enjoyed their friendships from their neighborhood, their church, and their camping trips. After Mr. Almand’s death in 2012, she lived “on her own” for over two years before moving to assisted living at Coventry Place in Decatur in June, 2015, after a serious stroke. She established a happy life there until another stroke on March 25, 2016, led to her brief residency at Harbor Grace. Mrs. Almand was a long time member of the Emmanuel Sunday School Class and Young at Heart at Zion Baptist Church in Covington.
Mrs. Almand is survived by her son Warren Almand of Atlanta, her son and daughter in law Wayne and Mary Lou Almand of Peachtree City, her son and daughter in law Joe and Patricia Almand of Covington, and her daughter and son in law Dana and Bruce Starks of Powder Springs; grandchildren Jennifer Almand, Katie and Bryan Carpenter, Matthew and Noelle Almand, Kayla and Drew Harris, and Christian Payne; great grandchildren Ivy Olivia Almand and Gavin Howard Carpenter; nieces Charlene Cape and Jan Brown.
The family will receive friends at Wheeler Funeral Home, 11405 Brown Bridge Road, Covington on Monday, April 11 from 5- 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 2:00 PM at Zion Baptist Church, 7077 Highway 212, Covington, GA with Rev. Reese Sanders officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery.
