Mrs. Lorene Mathis Smith, born in Monroe, Georgia, died September 13, 2009 at the age of 94.  She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Carl Smith Jr. who died two months earlier, they were married 74 years.  For many years when they lived on Jackson Lake, Mrs. Smith was known for entertaining family and friends.  The flowers she cared for were at their peak from spring through fall.  She was a member of the Miniature Garden Club where she gladly shared her self taught knowledge of caring for the garden.  An excellent cook she excelled in her specialty of cooking fresh vegetables.  The game of Bridge was her joy. A member of several clubs she often brought home the prize of high score.  A longtime member of Covington First United Methodist Church she was a faithful attendee until the last few years.  Mrs. Smith is survived by her Son Billy Smith and Daughter-in-law Irene R. Smith, two grandchildren Fleeta Smith-Baggett, Chris Smith and his wife Gidget Smith; three great grandchildren Madelyn Smith Baggett, Ashley Smith and Kristi Rene Smith. Graveside services for Mrs. Smith will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at Covington City Cemetery with the Reverend Doctor Douglas Gilreath and Reverend Doctor Royesse Stowe officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening September 14, 2009 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM.  In lieu of flowers those desiring may make contributions to the Covington First United Methodist Church General Fund at 1113 Church Street, Covington, GA 30014.  Friends may sign the online register book at www.wheelerfuneralhome.com.
