Mrs. Bernita Stanbery Aiken, 83 of Athens, formerly of Lyons, Ga, died June 29, 2016.

Mrs. Aiken was born in Charleston, Tennessee to the late Dr. William Cecil and Etta Moyers Henley Stanbery.

She was a lifelong resident of Lyons, Georgia where she was the K through 12 Guidance Counselor at Toombs Central School. She loved helping many high school students begin their careers while working there for many years. Later in life she became involved with the Oconee Regional Humane Society adopting her favorite dogs, Russ and Sadie. Mrs. Aiken was a regular member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, Ga.

Mrs. Aiken was a graduate of the Ward Belmont School for Girls in Nashville, Tennessee and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Travis Aiken and brother, Dr. Cecil Henley Stanbery.

Mrs. Aiken is survived by sons, William Stanbery Aiken of Lawrenceville; son and daughter-in-law Robert Travis and Roxann Campbell Aiken II of Covington; son Andrew Henley Aiken of Athens; daughter and son-in-law Etta Aiken and Jim Morrisey of Fayetteville; grandchildren Travis Campbell Aiken and his wife Allyssa Johnston and Robert White Aiken; sister-in-law Annette Stanbery; nephews Dr. William Cecil Stanbery II and wife Rose, and Dr. John Samuel Stanbery and wife Lisa.

The funeral service for Mrs. Aiken will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Covington. Interment will follow at Covington City Cemetery.
