Obituary

On January 16, 1927, the late Mr. & Mrs. Maud (Willie Mae) Freeman Sims were blessed with the birth of their youngest son, Thomas Ralph Sims. He was the sixth of their eleven children. Thomas was educated in the Newton County School System.

In 1949, Thomas married Miss Emma Jean Lackey. Together they had two beautiful children, Thomas Stanley and Kathy Diane. Thomas served in both the U.S. Army and the U. S. Air Force. He retired as a Sergeant from the Air Force in 1971.

Thomas grew up in the Good Hope Baptist Church where he served faithfully for many years. In his later years, he became a devoted Jehovah's Witness. Thomas worshipped at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Thomas was a very outgoing and intelligent man, who liked to make others smile. He had many hobbies and interests, including: hunting, baseball, doing repairs, reading, keeping up with current events, and enjoying the good Southern cooking of his family and friends. Thomas was a lifelong learner and enjoyed sharing what he learned with others, who could benefit from his advice and knowledge. Thomas was adored by his family and friends, and showed them kindness and love in return. He helped many people in his family, church, and community.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Emma Jean Lackey Sims, his son, Thomas Stanley Sims, his daughter, Kathy Diane Sims Billings, his grandson, Japel Heard, his brothers, James Sims and William Sims, and three sisters, Daisy Bennett, Betty Noble and Ruth Vason.

On October 13, 2014, Thomas left his home on this earth, but he will always live in our hearts. He leaves to cherish his memories, two grandchildren, Yalanda Hammond and DeMarcus Billings, seven great-grandchildren, Patrez, Uriah, Jamarcus, Chandler, Taylor, Nasir, and DeJaneke, five sisters, Mrs. Inez Phillips, Mrs. Lois McKibben, Mrs. Joyce Hendrix, Mr. & Mrs. Richard (Polly) Johnson, and Mrs. Margaret Tinsley, two special friends, Mr. Wilson Banks and Mr. Ron Williams, two especially devoted nieces and nephews-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Ronnie (Cynthia) Hurst and Mr.& Mrs. Paul (Deborah) Nolley, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
