Mrs. Marian Eloise "Weesie" Davis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend, died peacefully Jan. 6. She was born in 1928 to Carl and Lois Cogburn in Marietta.
She grew up in Jasper and graduated from Pickens County High School in 1945. She graduated from North Georgia College in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in biology and physical education.
While there, she was voted most friendly, best personality and Miss North Georgia College of 1949. Most importantly, she met and fell in love with her husband Harry. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, where she served as the Newton County Chapter Chaplain for many years. She was a dedicated Army wife for 24 years with assignments ranging from Germany to Oklahoma and was a "single mom" during her husband's tour to Korea and two tours to Vietnam.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Davis volunteered with hospital auxiliaries, with the last being Newton County where she worked in the "First Steps" program. She also ran a small business in Covington, the Patrick House gift shop, for more than a decade. She was a gifted storyteller and was always willing to perform for schools, churches and other community gatherings.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Covington where she taught Sunday School for 37 years and told children's stories in the sanctuary for many of those years. She was an avid and accomplished bridge player, playing duplicate competitively for many years with Harry, obtaining the level of Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. She was a member of multiple social bridge groups in Covington. As a couple, she and her husband loved to dance, as they did for many years as members of the Covington Elks Club.
Mrs. Davis is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Col. (Ret.) Harry Q. Davis Jr.; their children Nancy Harvill and Quigg Davis; grandchildren Nate Harvill, Drew Harvill, Zack Davis and Zeb Davis; sister Betty Jane Hall.
