John L. "Rookie Cordell, 82, of Covington, died Oct. 7. A World War II veteran, Mr. Cordell was an avid golfer and great baseball player. He enjoyed playing the guitar and had a talent for construction work. Mr. Cordell was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Lillie Hilliard Cordell and stepson Ricky Phelps. Surviving are wife of 30 years Betty Cordell; daughter Jeri Cordell of Loganville; son and daughter-in-law Jimmy and Terry Cordell of Peachtree City; stepchildren Beverly Clark, Vickie Stevenson, Jeffrey Phelps, Mark Phelps, all of Covington; grandchild Paden Cordell of Peachtree City; step-grandchildren Crystal, Kellie, Bryan, Brooks, Brett, Tamera; four great-grandchildren; sister Mrs. Jimmy (Betty) Edwards; brothers Alfred Cordell, James "Bo" Cordell, all of Covington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Access Road chapel of Caldwell & Cowan with the Rev. Jimmy Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 9.
