Doby E. White, 86 of Covington, passed away Monday, December 7, 2015 at home. He was born in Decatur to the late Oscar and Annie Lou Doby White. Doby graduated from SW DeKalb High School in 1946 where he was selected the “Most Quiet” of his class. He was a standout baseball player. Doby was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Doby was a self-employed dairy farmer for most of his life with his brother George. In his later years, he was employed as a guard at Hercules and an avid vegetable gardener.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Kathy White in 2002; siblings Fred White, Rebecca Burns, George White; and his beloved wife of 55 years Shirley Ruth Hayes White in 2014.

Doby is survived by his sister Mary E. Brookshire of Loudon, Tennessee, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation to all the caregivers who took excellent care of Mr. White, with a special thanks to Jerrie Townley Smith (Motor-mouth), Lamar Townley, Gloria Malcom, Darryl Burns and Hubert and Carol Townley.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the chapel Wheeler Funeral Home with the Rev. Carol Standard officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday, December 9, 2015 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Salem United Methodist Church, 3962 Salem Rd., Covington, GA. 30016.
