Mr. Clyde Rudolph Clarke died July 6 after a long illness. Mr. Clarke, the only son of the late Clyde Clement (Dorothy Etheridge) Clarke, was born in 1933 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He received his early education in the New York Public Schools graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., in 1950. He continued his education at Mandell Institute of Mechanical Drafting graduating in 1960. Mr. Clarke enlisted in the United States Air Force in April 1951 and was honorably discharged in April 1955. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In 1968, he married Hermione Johnson Edwards. A daughter, Therese Edwards Melendez, preceded him in death. Mr. Clarke was a very hard worker and gainfully employed by the New York City Department of Hospitals (1955-1960), NYC Registrar’s Office (1960-1968) and lastly, NYC Transit Authority as a motorman, starting in 1968 and retiring in 1993. In his spare time, he was an extreme jazz buff with a huge jazz collection and associated equipment. After moving to Georgia, he became a member of the Springfield Baptist Church in Conyers.

Surviving are faithful wife of 42 years Mrs. Hermione Clarke; daughter Catherine Edwards Brinson; sons-in-law Alexander Brinson, Narciso Melendez; grandchildren Francisca, Oronda, Christina, Horace, KizzyAnn, Christopher Matthew, Darryl, Christopher Michael, Inez, Tasiti and Jamal; great-grandchildren Omani, Riley, Camden, Arriana and Jaylin; sisters-in-law Victoria Burgess, Catherine Griffin, Karen Johnson, Althea Williams and Angela Johnson; brothers-in-law Clayton Burgess, Allen Griffin, Jeffrey Johnson and Robert Johnson; cousins The Nemleys — the Rev. James, Deborah, Howard, Thomas, Dawud, Marion, Bobbie, Terese Stephen, John, Monique, Haywood, Pamela, Martin and Tracey, Stanley Brown, Janice Hammonds, Donice Morris, William M., Rosetta Morris and Edwing Emmanuel; special friends Rich Turner and John Sanders (his jazz partners) and his devoted nurse Marjorie Rodney and her assistant Ms. Yolanda.

Funeral services for Mr. Clyde R. Clarke were held July 13, at 11 a.m. at Springfield Baptist Church in Conyers with Pastor Eric W. Lee Sr., Minister Billie Cox, the Rev. Michael Pigg and Minister Brian Russell officiating. Internment was in The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville.
