Amos Sutherland, of Oxford, passed away Friday, April 7, 2017, at the age of 84. Mr. Sutherland worked for 35 years for the Georgia Department of Administration Services and served for six years on the Newton County Board of Tax Assessors. Mr. Amos was a devoted family man who loved his church. An ordained deacon, Mr. Amos was also a member of First Baptist Church of Conyers and Grace Sunday School class. In his spare time, he enjoyed sawmilling, woodworking and his John Deere Tractor. Active in his community, Mr. Amos helped to form the Newton Civic Association. Additionally, Mr. Amos was a member of the Newton Hayriders Square Dance Club of Covington and the Atlanta Square Dance Association for many years. He will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and a loving friend to many. Mr. Amos was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Hiott, Sr. and Grace Sutherland; and brother, Eugene Sutherland.
Survivors include his loving wife, Edna Sutherland; daughter, Stacie Sutherland Floyd of Oxford, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Fain and Shannon Sutherland of Johnson City, TN; grandchildren, Graham Floyd, Kristen Floyd, Jolei Floyd, Garron Floyd, Amelia Sutherland, sister and brother-in-law, Marcilla and Paul Youngblood of Albany, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fain and Barbara Sutherland of Plains, GA, George and Phyllis Sutherland of Rocky Face, GA; sisters-in-law, Frankie Tye, Virgina Sutherland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2017, 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington with Rev. John Mark Oliver, Rev. Vicki Chesney and Rev. Butch Davis officiating. Friends may visit with his family at the funeral home one hour prior to his service, from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Conyers, MOVE Offering Fund, 2100 Highway 138, Conyers, GA 30013.
