A warrant has been issued for a woman in connction with an incident in which a man’s lip was cut with a knife.

A report from the Covington Police Department said an officer responded to a home on West Street just after midnight Tuesday in reference to an assault. The officer spoke with a man who reportedly was "bleeding profusely from his lip."

According to the report, the man told the officer that he was walking up the street and encountered a female he had been "talking to." The woman reportedly began arguing with the man about him seeing his "baby’s mother."

"(He) stated that quickly during the argument (the woman) produced a bent-up knife and cut his face. (He) stated that when he told (the woman) he was going to someone’s house to call the police, that (she) took off her head wrap, threw the knife down and took off running," the report stated.

EMS reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, and upon seeing the depth of the man’s laceration, EMS personnel said he would need to be transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to see a plastic surgeon.

While the victim was being treated by EMS, the officer reportedly showed him a booking photo of the suspect..

"That’s her," the victim said.

The woman’s head wrap and the knife possibly used in the assault man were found on West Street and taken as evidence. A warrant has been taken out for aggravated battery. The woman also has an active warrant from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear.

Traffic stop leads to drug charges

Two men were arrested on drug charges recently after a deputy noticed a vehicle with no headlights on.

A report from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy patrolling in the area of Bypass and Flat Shoals roads on Jan. 17 noticed a white truck traveling east on the Bypass Road without its headlights on. The report said the only lights on were one fog light and two parking lights.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, and Investigator Michael Cunningham said he approached the vehicle and smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

"He conducted a search of the vehicle and found marijuana and suspected methamphetamine. Subsequently, both of the two gentlemen were arrested," Cunningham said.

Thomas Parker, 25, and Daniel Holbrook, 49, of Covington, face charges including possession of marijuana less than an ounce, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

NHS student faces disorderly conduct charge

A student reported to a deputy that her boyfriend mistreated her at school last Friday.

A report said around 9 a.m., a student at the Newton College and Career Academy asked a deputy with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office to talk.

The student told the deputy that while she was at Newton High School preparing to go to the NCCA, she had been arguing with her boyfriend and he pushed her in the back and the face. She told the deputy she wanted to press charges.

Investigator Michael Cunningham said the deputy went to the school and viewed its surveillance video, where he saw the incident occur. Cunningham said the deputy also talked with a witness.

Joshua Prince, 17, of Covington, has been charged with a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.
