Weather, granite delay Squares reopening
Square-Construction-1

Don’t get blue, the jazz concert set for Thursday on the Covington Square will still happen – just not on the Square.

Construction delays have forced the Arts Association of Newton County to move the Daniel Jackson Band concert to Turner Lake next to the reception hall, unless — and it’s already hit the Square project — it rains again.

“It is the weather that delayed it,” at least in part, Covington City Manager Leigh Anne Knight said Tuesday. The Square renovations were originally set to be finished in time for Thursday’s concert.

City Planner Randy Vinson said another major factor in the delay is granite.

Specifically, “we got delayed with some granite around the stage area, but (we’re) still on track to being close to being able to wrap everything up by this Friday,” he said. “We are going to look at starting the irrigation (installation) tomorrow, the landscaping will go in Thursday and Friday and might carry over into early next week, but we should be close to wrapping everything up within a week.”

The Square project includes replacing the sidewalks (already finished), adding concrete around the war memorial (setting Tuesday), landscaping, and irrigation.

The county owns the Square, but leases it for maintenance and improvements by the city.
