The Newton County Water and Sewerage Authority is raising water and sewer rates July 1 in response to increased costs, including a higher purchase price from Newton County.
In a press release, Executive Director Mike Hopkins said water customers who use an average of 5,000 gallons will pay an additional $1.88 per month, while sewer customers with the same usage will pay $2.20 more per month.
"Obviously no one likes to see rates go up, even if just slightly," Hopkins said. "While increased expenses and the rising cost of providing service don't allow us to avoid reality, we remain committed to investing in our system and to finding ways to deliver quality service at reasonable cost to our customers."
He said the authority has had increased costs in meeting federal and state regulations and purchasing supplies necessary to keep water clean.
This is the second straight year that the county's main water providers, Covington and the water authority, have increased water rates.
