The Covington Square got its final trimming for the annual Lighting of the Square celebration this week as crews installed a giant wreath on the clock of the Historic Courthouse Tuesday.

While the rest of the Square — windows of the courthouse, tops of the buildings and trees in the Square Park —has been getting decorated since October, the giant wreath on top of the clock tower was missing. That’s because the bucket truck typically used to raise the wreath was sold by the Covington Fire Department earlier in the year.

Since then Covington Main Street Director Velinda Wheeles has been working on finding someone willing to help out.
That search resulted in a crew from Georgia Power coming over from Lithonia Tuesday morning.

“It’s a really good stroke of luck that everybody was in the right place at the right time,” Wheeles said.

A member of the Covington Fire Department told Wheeles he would be teaching a class on backboard safety to Georgia Power crews and volunteered to take one of Wheeles’ cards with him. At the training, Joshua Peacock took one of the cards and called Wheeles volunteering to help.

Peacock and his crew brought over their Bronco 150 bucket truck and took about 20 minutes to install the wreath on the south facing clock.
