There already had to be a special called election for State Senate District 43, and now there will need to be one more reason to go to the polls as Tuesday night’s results led to a runoff.
JaNice Van Ness was the top vote-getter with 37.09 percent, followed by Tonya P. Anderson with 26.13 percent of the 8,072 total votes cast in the three-county district.
Van Ness had the most votes in Newton and Rockdale counties with 747 and 2,179, respectively. Anderson had the most votes in DeKalb County with 875. There were a total of 4,004 voters in Rockdale County, 2,577 in Newton County and 1,491 in DeKalb County.

Stan Williams was the only other candidate to surpass the 10 percent mark among all voters, tallying 14.49 percent of the votes. Sawyer received 9.45 percent, Marcus Jordan 5.51 percent, Diane Adoma 3.44 percent and Rodney Upton .73 percent.

Due to no candidate picking up more than 50 percent of the votes, a runoff is necessary. The runoff election will occur Dec. 1.
The special election was needed due to Ronald Ramsey, who was serving his fifth term, being appointed as an associate judge in the DeKalb County’s new traffic court earlier this year.
