The Covington City Council voted on several road closures during Monday’s meeting.
The first closure to come before the council was passed, with a condition on the change of the road being closed. The closure, for an Airsoft anniversary function on West Street, was requested for West Street from Hwy. 278 to Old Atlanta Hwy on March 28, between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
Councilman Chris Smith made the motion to have the closure on Old Atlanta Hwy.
“I feel it is not in the best interest of the city to shut that down for 16 hours,” Smith said.
After a call to the owner of AllStar Airsoft, he said that he still wished for the closure to be on West Street. However, the council went ahead with the motion to close Old Atlanta Hwy., leaving the decision to the business owner.
The council then approved the closure of the Covington Square for the 7th Annual Easter on the Square April 5, between 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The Square will also be closed for the Southern Cruisers Riding Club Car Show on April 12 between 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and the Newton County Farm Bureau AG Day and Tractor Show on April 18 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The AG Day and Tractor Show will require just the inner lanes of the Square to be closed.
The final closure approved was for the Covington Cheerios Challenge to be held on April 18, between 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
