Alton Andrew Jackson, Jr., 21, of Atlanta, and Terrence T. Sheppard, 21, of Decatur were arrested Wednesday and charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault after a 28-year-old Covington man was hospitalized with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Covington police officers were called to Monticello Street around 10:30 a.m. When Officer Jerry Roberts arrived, he noticed a white BMW attempting to leave the home where the shooting had been reported. When he attempted to stop the BMW, it fled with Roberts in pursuit.

The vehicle fled south on Ga. Highway 36, turned south on the Covington Bypass Road and eventually back on Ga. Highway 81, re-entering the city limits and attempting to make a north turn onto Turner Lake Road. Unable to navigate the turn, the driver crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Washington Street and Turner Lake Road.

The two men, later identified as Jackson and Sheppard fled the car, both armed with handguns. Th etwo were eventually cornered by police and gave up, according to CPD Capt. Ken Malcom.

"The investigation quickly revealed that the two armed suspects had stolen the shooting victim's car in what appears to be a drug-related home invasion," Malcom said in a press release Wednesday.

Two shotguns were retrieved from the crash site along with a significant amount of what appears to be marijuana. Covington detectives are still investigating this case.
