Tornado watch in effect through 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Newton County, Rockdale County and much of north Georgia through 8 p.m.

There's a 90 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today in Newton County, with some storms potentially packing damaging wind.

Expect a high near 79, and rainfall of up to a quarter-inch. Rain is likely to continue through 1 a.m., with the potential for severe thunderstorms, according to the Weather Service. Damaging wind, isolated tornadoes and large hail are possible.

Tuesday should be clear and cooler, with a more seasonal high of 63 and a low overnight Tuesday of 35.
