More than 600 volunteers and 25 organizations spent their Saturday cleaning up Newton County as part of the annual Great American Cleanup. "We were very pleased with the turnout, and we appreciate everyone’s participation," said Laurie Riley, with Keep Covington-Newton Beautiful. " Though the rain hampered efforts a little bit, Riley said turnout was better than last year. Anyone who missed today’s event or wants to clean up their street or neighborhood can still participate in a cleanup through May 31. Keep Covington-Newton Beautiful will provide all cleanup supplies. The organization is also always looking for groups to participate in its Adopt A Mile program, where a group agrees to clean a stretch of highway four times a year. Registration information and forms are available at www.kcnb.biz, or call (770) 784-2015.
