A 19-year-old Newton County teen was shot in the back during a robbery Tuesday night and is now unable to speak after going through surgery according to investigators from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The young man, whose identity has been withheld, was reportedly standing outside of a residence on Hunter’s Trace at roughly 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night, leaning inside the window of a vehicle occupied by two other people when two black males approached the group and ordered everyone on the ground. According to NCSO Lt. Bill Watterson, all three complied and one of the victims had their wallet taken. The 19-year-old was reportedly shot in the back as he lay on the ground. Neighbors in the area reportedly called authorities after hearing the gunshots and when investigators responded they found the victim. The young man was life flighted to Atlanta Medical Center where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable but critical condition. As of press time, however, the investigation was at a standstill because the victim was unable to speak, according to investigator Bob Gaddy who spoke with the young man’s doctors. Gaddy also noted that investigators have no suspects in the shooting at this time, but are asking that anyone with information contact him at the NCSO at (678) 625-1429. All callers can remain anonymous.
