Parents of students at Middle Ridge Elementary School and Clements Middle School are invited to attend an informational meeting on Nov. 1 at Clements Middle School to review possible Supplemental Educational Services (SES) currently available for their children. This is the second informational meeting provided by the Office of Federal Programs of the Newton County School System. After the informational meeting, parents will have the opportunity to meet various qualified SES providers in the local area.
According to Dr. P. Paulette Bragg, Director of Federal Programs for Newton County Schools, Supplemental Educational Services is free tutoring for students by outside organizations - paid for by federal funds. The services are mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
"It is additional academic instruction provided outside the regular school day," said Bragg. "It is designed to increase the academic achievement of low income students who attend qualifying schools. In our system, we currently have two schools that qualify - Middle Ridge Elementary School and Clements Middle School."
Bragg added that "low income students" are determined by their eligibility for free or reduced price meals.
Details of the program and procedures for receiving the services will be explained at the Parent Informational Meetings. Immediately following the meeting, the school district will host a Providers Fair to allow parents to meet and interview the numerous SES providers available.
The Nov 1 meeting will be held for parents beginning at 9 a.m. at Clements Middle with parent registration, at 9:15 a.m. the informational meeting will begin and from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. the SES Providers Fair will take place.
