Summer concert series opens Friday

The bluegrass band the Freight Hoppers opens the Second Friday Summer Concert Series with a performance at 7 p.m. Friday on the square downtown.

The performance series is in its third year and is sponsored by Main Street Covington and the Arts Association in Newton County. All performances are free.

Other performers include Tom Becker, a former member of the New Christy Minstrels, performing a tribute to John Denver, titled "Back Home Again," on Sept. 9. On Aug. 12, Bobby Swain and the blues Generation Band will perform, and on Oct. 14, Derwin Daniels will be featured in a concert of jazz saxophone, new soul and funk jazz.

The Covington Community Band under the direction of T.K. Adams will perform at 5 p.m. on July 4.
You can bring a lawn chair or a blanket for seating.
