If you think 4-H is busy during the school year, you should see us all summer!
Students who were in third grade or higher this year can join us for some activities. For more details, call us at 770-784-2010.
Also, don’t forget to purchase your Six Flags and White Water day passes and combo season passes at the extension office all summer. We accept cash and credit, but no checks.
Health Rocks Day Camp
Students leaving the third grade up through middle school can spend the week at the 4-H office with Health Rocks Day Camp on June 16-20 for only $40.
State-trained teen ambassadors lead a healthy living curriculum on making good choices, sandwiched between recreation, games, crafts, snacks and more.
Camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. all five days; youth must bring lunch.
Watermelon, pumpkin contests
Mitcham Farms is again sponsoring cash prizes for the Newton County 4-H pumpkin growing contest.
Pumpkins should be planted by June 1, so it is time to select a location and get seeds. Our agricultural and natural resources agent, Ted Wynne, can also assist with advice and tips.
Weigh-in will be held at Mitcham Farms in late September, with the top three winners earning cash prizes. The top winner moves on to state competition for additional prize opportunities.
(Tip: Last year no one grew a pumpkin and the prizes went unclaimed! Don’t miss out on this excellent opportunity to win!)
Watermelon seeds should go in the ground as soon as possible for the July 30 weigh-in. Top county winner earns a t-shirt and moves on to state for a chance at cash prizes. For either contest, call us to register your child for 4-H and get your name on the weigh-in list. Pre-registration is required.
4-H Night atMedieval Times
Enroll your child in 4-H to be able to purchase discount tickets for the entire family to visit Medieval Times on June 25. Tickets include the tournament show, dinner, a presentation on falcons and horses and meeting the cast.
Oxford Fourth of July parade
4-H members will participate in the annual parade as Oxford celebrates 175 years as a city.
Members of all ages invited to take part in building the float and marching in the parade. Free music and treats available at the end of the parade.
4-H members age 9 and up may enter the Georgia National Fair 4-H photography contest. Categories are 4-H activities, 4-H service events, agriculture and general.
Volunteer leaders may also enter in the 4-H and 4-H service categories.
Stone Mountain laser show
Families will head to the laser show at the end of summer to celebrate back-to-school time. Sign up with the office to get a vote on which date we select!
County 4-H Council and other clubs
If your child will turn 9 years old or older any time during 2014, be sure to let us know which clubs you are interested in for next school year.
This allows us to add you to the reminder list for first meetings so you don’t miss out on all the back to school chaos. Clubs include County Council for middle and high school youth, horse club and shooting sports.
Those interested in showing livestock, including youth as young as rising first and second graders, should contact us immediately for information.
Volunteer leaders are needed for all groups.
Registration is still open for Cloverleaf Camp at Wahsega 4-H Center. Any student third through sixth grades who turned 9 years old or older in 2013 may register for only $310.
Camp includes transportation, shirt and all activities, and takes place June 23-27 in Dahlonega.
Camps for seventh grade and up are also available, but space is extremely limited. Call for up-to-date information.
Rising high school students
Rising ninth through 12th graders may register for State 4-H Council on June 20-22 for only $98, and Georgia 4-H Ambassador Weekend on August 16-17 for $75.
Portfolio workshops, teen leader trainings and other opportunities for middle and high school youth are also taking place all summer.
