AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a military veteran stole a Humvee from a Georgia military base before leading police in South Carolina on a 20-mile chase.

Aiken County deputies said 47-year-old Michael Warning faces several charges including attempted murder after the Friday evening chase. The FBI and military police are also investigating the incident.

Authorities say Warning stole the Humvee from a display at Fort Gordon for the Fourth of July. Police began chasing it after it was spotted about 15 miles east on Interstate 20 near Aiken.

Investigators say the 6-ton Humvee nearly stuck a patrol car as the driver weaved through traffic, and at times, drove on the wrong side of the road and on the sidewalk.

Authorities didn't detail Warning's military service. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
