ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A new camera system being used on several Clarke County School District buses captured images of 17 violators in its first full week of operation.

Athens-Clarke County police Sgt. James Carter says violators face a $300 fine for their first violation, $750 for a second offense and $1,000 for a third.

Carter tells The Athens Banner-Herald (http://bit.ly/1hDx0mN) that authorities are hoping to change driver behavior by having them pay the consequences for their violations.

The violations were captured by cameras activated when a school bus arm with a stop sign and flashing red lights swing out as the bus picks up of discharges students. Close-up images record the tags of violating vehicles.

The system utilizes a series of six cameras mounted on the bus to catch violators from multiple angles.
