ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens is offering Georgians tips on getting financial help if their property is damaged by cold weather that's moving into the region.
Hudgens says repairs to internal plumbing, carpet, furniture and other belongings caused by frozen pipes is typically covered under homeowners' policies. Hudgens says damage from water entering homes from the outside may not be covered.
Hudgens says renters may be covered for water damage from an upstairs neighbor through their own renter's policy or the neighbor's policy if they're proven to have been negligent.
Hudgens is also reminding Georgians to keep space heaters, wood stoves and other heat sources away from flammable materials, including curtains and bedding.
