THENS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities have dropped the charges against an Athens veteran who was arrested after breaking a window to free a dog from a hot car.

Multiple news outlets report Michael Hammons was charged with criminal trespassing May 12 after smashing out a window when he saw a distressed dog in a rapidly-heating Mustang. Ken Mauldin, district attorney for the Superior Court of Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties, said Tuesday he had dropped the charges against Hammons. Maudlin told the paper the car's owner, 22-year-old Elantra Cunningham, agreed with the decision.

Cunningham was cited for leaving the dog in the hot car.

Georgia state law allows an individual to break a car window to save a child in distress, but the same protection does not apply to pets.
