CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) - Patrons in Carrollton will soon be able to get takeout cups for alcoholic beverages purchased at downtown bars.

The Times-Georgian reports that the Carrollton City Council approved measures Monday night that would allow open containers downtown as long as the beverage was bought at a business in the district. City manager Casey Coleman said the rule would not apply to alcohol bought outside the district because "this is not Savannah, New Orleans or Las Vegas."

The council also approved a measure that lets the city manager issues special permits to organizations that want to serve alcohol during events on city property. That can include the amphitheater or city parks.
