BALL GROUND, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old boy is hospitalized with severe injuries after his father accidentally ran over him with a riding lawnmower.

The accident happened shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday in Ball Ground, a Cherokee County community about 50 miles north of Atlanta.

Cherokee County Fire Department spokesman Tim Cavender said the father was backing the mower up when the child walked behind it and was knocked down.

Cavender tells CBS 46 (http://bit.ly/1rn4NLM) that the boy suffered injuries to his legs, fingers, toes and an arm, but fortunately none of his major arteries were cut.

He was conscious, breathing and talking to emergency workers when he was flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
