FORT VALLEY, Ga. (AP) — An 8-year-old boy has been shot to death by a gunman who fired through the door of his apartment in central Georgia, authorities said Tuesday.

The shooting happened shortly before 1:40 a.m. Tuesday at Indian Oak Apartments in Fort Valley, about 25 miles southwest of Macon, Peach County Coroner Kerry Rooks said.

The boy, Jaimel Anderson, was shot several times in the upper torso, officials said. He was found lying unconscious and in his pajamas when the first officers arrived and began life-saving efforts, The Telegraph newspaper of Macon reported (http://bit.ly/1zR14oA ).

"It's awful. He was shot more than once," Rooks told The Telegraph. "This kid wasn't doing anything, but for some reason someone goes to the apartment and starts shooting through the door."

The child was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. Tuesday. The boy's mother was at work and he was in someone else's care, Rooks said.

No arrests had been made as of midmorning Tuesday.

"We don't think it was random. We think it's a deliberate act," said Lawrence Spurgeon, Fort Valley's public safety director.
