GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a pregnant woman killed as she tried to cross a highway in northeast Georgia was heading home from a convenience store when the crash happened.

Georgia State Trooper Devon Fields identified the woman as 29-year-old Kimberly Michelle Coates.

Fields said she was in the final three months of her pregnancy.

The Times reports (http://bit.ly/1p9DfWF) that Coates was struck by a vehicle around 9:30 p.m. Sunday as she tried to cross the southbound lanes of Georgia 365 near Mud Creek Road in northeastern Hall County.

Authorities say the driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting the woman, but struck her with the front of the car.

After the accident, officials discovered the woman was pregnant.
