A spinout on I-20 resulted in the arrest on Hwy. 278.of Dwight Johnson early Monday morning, at 12:42 a.m.
Covington Police officers responded to a call from dispatch of a dark Ford Expedition with rims that spun out on I-20 eastbound, hitting the median and getting off on exit 90.

According to reports CPD made contact with a vehicle matching the description on Hwy. 278. The vehicle, reportedly, entered the parking lot and turned in front of several businesses without stopping. The vehicle then continued on before going over a curb and finally stopping in the Waffle House parking lot.

When CPD approached the driver’s side door, the driver reportedly had problems rolling down the window, lowering the passenger window instead. The officer then noticed a blue bottle in the cup holder with the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from it.

When asked if he had been drinking, the driver, Johnson, responded he had not had anything to drink. The officer then went back to his patrol car and ran Johnson’s license. It showed suspended with a permit only.

According to reports when the officer went back to Johnson’s vehicle, he once again had trouble rolling down the window. Johnson told the officer he was headed home in Decatur even though he was traveling eastbound.

CPD then assisted Johnson to a patrol car and searched his vehicle, finding a bottle of Bud Light in the consul which, “still cold to the touch and still had some alcoholic smelling beverage in it.”

Officers also saw that the vehicle had a flat tire on rear passenger side and scratch marks on it, consistent with striking a medium wall.

Johnson, who blew a .214 and .213 on the Intoxilyzer 9000, was cited for Driving Under the Influence, Driving on a Suspended License, Open Container and Failure to Maintain Lane.
