A woman stopped for driving too fast ended up charged with firearm and drug possession as well Sunday afternoon.

Officers stopped 25-year-old Betty Jean Brown on Emory Street after clocking her driving approximately 90 mph on Interstate 20 west. Brown reportedly told officers that she didn’t know the speed limit and wasn’t aware she had been driving that fast.

While getting Brown’s license information, the officers could smell a strong odor of fresh marijuana coming from the vehicle. When asked if she had any weapons or drugs in the car, Brown allegedly told officers that she didn’t have any drugs in the vehicle but there was a handgun under her seat. She allowed officers to search her car and they found a metal container in the center console that contained what appeared to be marijuana.

After arriving at the Newton County Detention Center, a detention officer found that Brown not only had marijuana in her car, she also had some in her purse in a small plastic bag. Brown was also found to be a convicted felon, meaning it was illegal for her to have possession of a gun.

She was charged with speeding (90 in a 65), possession of marijuana less than an ounce, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of drugs within the guard line.
