Sorority, academy offer assistance to local homeless

Several women from the Garden of Gethsemane Homeless Shelter were treated to makeovers thanks to the Golden Razor Academy and the sisters of the Chi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

As part of a program called Enhancing Self Image with Purpose, the women (and some children) had haircuts, manicures and met with an image consultant who told them about proper attire and makeup for job interviews.

Co-Owner of the academy Sandra Walden allowed the society to use the building on Saturday when it is typically closed, saying that she was happy to help the women from the shelter.

"Sometimes you just have to help people," said Walden.

Program chair Bresha Franklin said that the sisters first thought about doing the makeovers in January, but demand was so high they had to wait until they could find a larger venue.

"We’re not just getting them ready to be marketable; we’re helping them feel good about themselves. For women especially, you want to look nice and feel good, because life happens to everyone."
