Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Jan. 12 at the Bailey BP on Ga. Highway 81.
According to Lt. Mark Mitchell, public information officer with NCSO, three black males, one of which was carrying a shotgun, entered the store around 11 p.m., demanding money.
The suspect carrying the shotgun was described as wearing a black and white jacket and black pants. The second suspect was wearing a gray or charcoal colored hooded sweatshirt, khaki shorts, tennis shoes and white socks. A third suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and appeared to be wearing gloves.

Teens arrested after burglary, chase
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department arrested two teens Dec. 12 after the duo stole a shotgun from the home and tried to use the weapon in the escape.
According to Lt. Mark Mitchell, public information officer with NCS, while deputies were responding to a suspicious activity call at a home on Arthurs Lane in the Old Covered Bridge subdivision, two males exited the home through the window armed with a shot gun. The gun had been stolen from the home.
During the escape, the weapon was pointed at deputies and both suspects fled the scene of the crime. Deputies gave chase on foot. The suspects were apprehended a short time later and the weapon was returned to the owner.
The male carrying the shot is charged with aggravated assault, burglary and obstruction of officers. The second suspect is charged with burglary and obstruction of officers.
DUI suspect too drunk to take test
Officers with the Covington Police Department charged Arbie McKibben with a DUI Jan. 8 after he admitted to driving drunk rather than take any of the sobriety tests.
According to the incident report, the officer was driving on Ga. Highway 278 when he spotted McKibben weaving on the road, crossing the middle line multiple times. When officers pulled him over, McKibben was eyes were bloodshot, his speech was delayed and slurred, and the officer could smell an odor of alcohol.
Officers attempted to perform multiple sobriety tests; however, McKibben told officers, at least twice, "I’m too tipsy to do the test."
McKibben was transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center where he provided two breath samples, which measured .157 and .159.
He is charged with DUI per say, DUI less safe and driving on a suspended license.
Driver, passenger face for multiples charges
Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Department stopped a Conyers man Dec. 28 for speeding on Fairview Road and uncovered a litany of offenses by the passenger.
According to the incident report, while patrolling the area around Fairview Road and Womack Road, deputies pulled over Demario Martin for speeding. After conducting a search of the vehicle, deputies discovered marijuana and a 9-millimeter handgun. Demario Martin was arrested for driving in excess of maximum limits, possession of marijuana less than an ounce and possession of a concealed weapon.
The passenger, Demarcus Martin, was arrested for giving a false name, and for having outstanding warrants for probation violation, battery, theft by taking and interfering with a 911 call.
Both men were transported to the Newton County Jail.
Officers investigating stolen utilities
Officers with the Covington Police Department are looking for the owner of home on Emory Street after utility workers discovered the residents had been stealing water and electricity.
According to the incident report, a meter base stolen from a home on Corley Street was attached to the residence on Emory Street. Utilities to the Emory Street home had been disconnected in October, 2007.
With the stolen meter base, the home received 17,000 gallons of water and 200 kilowatts of electricity, which is valued at a total of $342.91.
Officers were unable to discern the property owner or renter.
