Several people arrested, more wanted for fraudulently obtaining federal funding

Maureen Francois and Lamonitrias Smith have been arrested and six more people are wanted in Newton County for fraudulently obtaining federal funding for affordable housing.

The fraud charges come from people allegedly obtaining federal funding for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. In total, approximately 80 individuals in the state are scheduled to be arrested on charges of theft by taking and/or making false statements, according to John Bankhead, spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The fraud involved throughout the state amounts to roughly $1.1 million.
